Gansbaai
Local Attractions and Activities

Other local activities include:

  • De Kelders Caves – these are set into the cliffs along the coastline and constitute some of the most beautiful sea caves in the Cape. The main cave is the site of an archaeological dig, and has helped scientists to prove the existence of man in this area of South Africa over 80,000 years ago.

In addition to this the hiking trails to the caves are strikingly beautiful and are highly recommended. Trails range from short and easy to longer and more challenging for those who have the time and effort to spare. The Duiwelsgat hiking trail links Gansbaai to De Kelders and is 7km long, whilst the Byeneskrans hiking trail is a 5.5km circular route with stunning views of the surrounding areas.

  • Fynbos and milkwood forest 4 x 4 trips – the Cape region is home to one of the widest and most diverse arrays of flora in the world, and is home to fynbos, proteas and milkwood forests. 4 x 4 trips are a very popular way of viewing the abundance of local plant life and are always thoroughly enjoyed by plant enthusiasts and general sightseers alike.

  • This area of the Cape has virtually untouched sandy white beaches that stretch for miles along the coastline, each with a collection of rock pools to explore. Some of the beaches have lagoon pools for those who fancy a safe swim in the sea water.

  • For fishing enthusiasts it is possible to organise both boat and shore based fishing on either one of the two harbour breakwaters or from one of the rocky outcrops along the coast. Please note that deep sea fishing needs to be booked in advance to secure an experienced local fisherman and boat – please contact us if you would like us to do this on your behalf.

  • Sea kayaking is available where you will be led by an experienced guide along the coastline on either a half or full day trip. No previous experience is necessary.

Alternatively you can book a lagoon kayaking expedition, where you will be led by a guide through a river from Standford to Hermanus, enjoying lunch and refreshments along the way. Over 130 species of bird are found in this area, including the African fish eagle.

  • Horse riding is available through a local valley surrounded by hills and streams.

  • Gansbaai is situated on the outskirts of the world famous wine route, and there is a wide selection of vineyards in the area around Gansbaai.

  • For golf enthusiasts there are three major golf courses nearby:

    • Kleinbaai Golf Course in the town neighbouring Gansbaai.

    • Hermanus Golf Course, which also boasts an elaborate lounge and stunning views of the surrounding mountains.

    • Arabella Golf Course, which is set on a lagoon overlooking the sea. This is a relatively new course that meets international standards and attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. Located on this golf course is South Africa’s only 6 star hotel.

In addition to these three there are golf courses in three of the local towns; Caledon, Riviersondersond and Bredasdorp.

If time permits either before or after your Surf and Turf package it is highly recommended that you explore Cape Town and the surrounding areas. The Cape is a captivating part of South Africa that has its own unique character and natural beauty. The coasts along the Cape are home to some of the most stunning beaches in Africa, and the local wine routes can take a good few days to fully appreciate.

If you are interested in any of these activities please ask the very friendly staff at the reception of the guest lodge, who will help to book any activities that takes your fancy, or ask us to look into them for you.
